Report: Volvo Eyes Fully Autonomous Luxury Cars Within five Years

Within five years, your Volvo will be able to drive you around, but you better embark saving if you want this optional feature.

Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson this week told reporters at the Global Mobility Leadership Forum near Detroit that the company’s upcoming autopilot feature will add $Ten,000 to the vehicle’s cost, according to Bloomberg. That’s not exactly cheap, but consider this: with Volvo’s version of autopilot, you may not even have to observe the road.

Unlike Tesla’s current autopilot feature, which requires drivers to keep their mitts on the steering wheel and take control in an emergency, Volvo is planning to release a system that lets you “entirely disengage,” the report notes.

“To make a car even more premium, one of the most interesting things is a total autopilot,” Samuelsson said, according to Bloomberg. “Not a supervised version, but indeed the one that you can sit back and witness a movie or whatever.”

The car will still have a steering wheel for those times you feel like driving. That’s significant, given that most Americans remain wary of a world where all vehicles are fully autonomous. A latest Kelley Blue Book survey found that fifty one percent of respondents choose to have utter control of their car–even if it is less safe for other drivers. Meantime, forty nine percent favor a safer roadway for all, even if it means less control over their own vehicle.

The fresh details about Volvo’s autopilot come after the company earlier this month partnered with automotive safety systems company Autoliv to “develop next generation autonomous driving software.” Volvo and Autoliv are forming a fresh company in Volvo’s hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden, where they plan to develop fresh advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving technologies.
