The two thousand seventeen Tesla Model X is unlike any other SUV on the market. It’s an electrical vehicle with a long driving range, cutting-edge technology (including a self-driving option), and it doesn’t compromise on space or convenience.

Is the Tesla Model X a Good SUV?

The Tesla Model X is a good SUV with the latest tech features and a long electrical driving range. However, that tech and that range come at an above-class-average beginning price. Its panoramic front windshield and Falcon Wing doors help it stand out from its luxury midsize SUV competitors, and its quick-charge technology means you can recharge on the go. However, its interior isn’t as nice as those in class rivals, and its 2nd row doesn’t fold down.

Should I Buy the Tesla Model X?

If you’re ready for an all-electric vehicle, you can’t go wrong with the Tesla Model X. It has an electrical driving range of inbetween two hundred thirty seven and two hundred ninety five miles, depending on the battery you choose. If speed is what you’re into, the Model X has you covered with some of the quickest zero-to-60-mph times in a production model vehicle. But this is a pricey car, at about $15,000 more than the next-most-expensive vehicle in the class. And you won’t make up that price difference with gas savings anytime soon, if at all. There are less expensive electrical vehicles but none with the spectacle and luxury of a Tesla.

We Did the Research for You: ten Lumps of Data Analyzed

Our rankings and reviews aren’t based on our own tests and individual opinions. Instead, we collect and analyze every published, credible review and combine that analysis with safety and reliability data from independent agencies. To help you determine if the two thousand seventeen Tesla Model X is right for you, we analyzed ten lumps of research.

The Tesla Model X was introduced for the two thousand sixteen model year. A fresh one hundred kWh battery has been added to the lineup for 2017. Other than that, the two thousand seventeen model sees few switches. As a result, this overview uses applicable research and reviews from both the two thousand sixteen and two thousand seventeen model years.

At U.S. News, we`ve been ranking and reviewing cars for almost a decade, with a staff that has a combined seventy five years of practice in the automotive industry. How Much Does the Tesla Model X Cost?

The two thousand seventeen Tesla Model X has an MSRP of $85,500. This is a higher beginning price than most other SUVs in the class, but it comes with a long list of standard features, such as a 17-inch touch screen, Falcon Wing doors that can open in almost any parking space, and automatic emergency braking. The Model X also offers features many rivals don’t, including Enhanced Autopilot and a self-driving feature. These either take control of some driving aspects of the car or totally take over driving the driving for you. You’ll need at least $93,000 to get all the self-driving features. The top Model X trim starts at $135,500, and a fully loaded Model X can lightly top $150,000.

The Tesla Model X is expensive, but there are electrified vehicle incentives that can save you some cash. A $7,500 federal income tax credit is available to Model X buyers. Additionally, some states suggest their own incentives, which can include rebates, tax credits, or discounts on charging.

Tesla Model X Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Tesla Model X or Audi Q7?

The Audi Q7 starts at $49,000, which is $36,500 less than the Model X. Both SUVs have nimble treating, and the Q7 has a potent available supercharged V6 that produces three hundred thirty three horsepower, but it is no match for the crazy quick acceleration you get from the Model X. While the Model X has high-quality materials, its interior design is bland for its price. The Q7 has an upscale interior with premium materials and a stylish design. Additionally, outside noise bleeds into the Model X, while the Q7 is whisper quiet. The Tesla does have a bit more cargo space than the Audi.

Both SUVs come with similar standard features, including heated front seats, automatic braking, and a rearview camera. However, the Model X’s 17-inch touch screen surpasses almost every other screen on the market, including the Q7’s 7-inch. In addition, the Model X’s panoramic front windshield is much larger than the Q7’s panoramic sunroof. The Model X also has bleeding-edge autonomous driving and safety tech that the Q7 does not. While the Q7 has a lower price and a more upscale interior, the Model X’s better spectacle and vast array of tech features make it more appealing. If you can spring for it, go for the Model X.

Which Is Better: Tesla Model X or BMW X6?

The BMW X6 has a beginning price of $64,100, which is about $24,000 less than the Model X. The X6 has similar spectacle, especially in its upper trims – which are more price-comparable to the Model X. The BMW X6 can accelerate from zero to sixty mph in Four.6 seconds when tooled with its available V8 engine. The high-performance BMW X6 M does it in Four.0 seconds vapid. It’s not fairly the Two.9 seconds the Model X’s fastest trim will go, but for the lower price, it’s a good alternative, and what is an extra 2nd?

The X6 has a large Ten.2-inch display and an easy-to-use infotainment system that is one of the best on the market. It may not have all the bells and whistles of the Model X, but it does have Apple CarPlay as an option while the Tesla does not. However, the X6’s interior falls slightly behind the Model X’s. It has high-quality materials and an upscale feel, but it’s not as spacious as the Model X. Passengers in the rear seats have limited headroom because of the X6’s sloping roofline. The Model X has more headroom thanks to its panoramic front windshield that swoops over the 2nd row. The X6 is a solid SUV, but the Model X is an all-around better vehicle.

Which Is Better: Tesla Model X or Tesla Model S?

The Tesla Model S is a luxury large car. It starts at $68,000, which is more expensive than most luxury midsize SUVs but cheaper than the Model X. It comes with the same size standard battery (75 kWh) but has a slightly longer range than the Model X. However, with its one hundred kWh battery, it has a top range of three hundred thirty five miles, which hammers the Model X’s top range of two hundred ninety five miles that it gets with the same battery. This Model S trim also costs less and accelerates from zero to sixty mph 0.6 seconds quicker than the one hundred kWh Model X. However, the Model S has less space for both people and stuff. It has a maximum 58.1 cubic feet of cargo space and only seats five adults. The Model X has 88.1 cubic feet of cargo space and seats up to seven. For $Four,000 you can add two rear-facing leap seats in the cargo hold of the Model S, enlargening seating capacity from five to seven, but these seats are only suitable for children. They fold vapid when not in use and don’t take up cargo space when folded. The Model S and Model X are similar in many ways, but if you need more passenger or cargo space, the Model X is the way to go.

Model X Spectacle

Model X Engine: A Dragster in Disguise

The Model X doesn’t have an engine. Instead, it comes with a choice of three batteries: seventy five kWh (standard), ninety kWh, or one hundred kWh.

Tho’ it’s an all-electric SUV, the Model X has blood-pumping acceleration. Its top-of-the-line, performance-focused P100D model rockets from zero to sixty mph in Two.9 seconds and has a top speed of one hundred fifty five mph. With the optional Ludicrous speed upgrade (only available in this trim), you’ll be thrown back in your seat and leave behind you’re in an SUV altogether. The slowest you’ll get to sixty mph in the Model X is 6.0 seconds in the base 75D.

Model X Mileage and Charging: Just Keep Driving

The base 75D Model X has an electrified range of two hundred thirty eight miles. To compare its fuel efficiency against gasoline-only SUVs, the EPA measures mpg-e. The Model X gets ninety one mpg-e in the city and ninety five mpg-e on the highway. The 90D model gets ninety mpg-e in the city and ninety four mpg-e on the highway. The P100D gets 81/92 mpg-e. To learn more, see Decoding MPG-e.

With a 240-volt charger, you’ll get about thirty miles of range per hour of charging your Model X. In addition to charging your Tesla at home, you can also charge the Model X on Tesla’s Supercharger network. At these charging stations, you can add up to one hundred sixty miles of range in thirty minutes. Tesla Supercharging and regular charging stations are located nationwide at select rest stops, restaurants, hotels, and shopping centers.

Model X Rail and Treating: Carlike Treating

The Model X may be an SUV, but it doesn’t feel like one when you’re driving it. It drives more like its smaller sibling the Tesla Model S luxury large car. The Model X is stable around corners and has little bod lean. It also has direct and responsive steering. However, you can feel some disturbances over dips in the road. All-wheel drive is standard.

Model X Interior

How Many People Does the Model X Seat?

The Model X seats five, but six- and seven-seat configurations are available. Standard features include a panoramic front windshield, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, 14-way power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, and Falcon Wing doors that look like the doors on Marty McFly’s DeLorean but can open in very taut spaces. Heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are available.

The front seats of the Model X have slew of head- and legroom, and the front windshield spreads up and over the front occupants, making for excellent driver visibility and good views for those in the 2nd row. That vast windshield also makes for solid headroom in the 2nd row. Legroom in the 2nd row (and the optional third row) isn’t as generous. The Falcon Wing doors make getting in and out of the 2nd and third rows effortless, thanks to the broad opening.

Model X and Car Seats

Depending on if you get the five-, six- or seven-seat Model X, there are up to four LATCH systems for child seats. They have not yet been evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for ease of use.

Model X Interior Quality

Tesla is equal parts tech company and auto manufacturer, and the Model X’s plain interior design is more reflective of its tech side. It’s a little plain for an SUV that can reach well into the six-figure price range. It has high-quality leather and nice accents, but its design lacks the style some of its rivals wield. The Audi Q7, for example, has a top-notch interior with an upscale design and premium materials. Additionally, some road and wind noise can make the Model X a bit noisy.

Model X Cargo Space

The Model X has both a front and rear trunk, creating a total of 88.1 cubic feet of cargo space. This is more than the Audi Q7, which has 71.6 cubic feet at most. It is also more than the BMW X6, which only has a total of 59.7 cubic feet. However, both of those SUVs have two rows of flat-folding rear seats. The optional third-row seats in the Model X can be folded down to make more room for cargo, but the second-row seats cannot be folded, which means there’s not much room for larger cargo items. The “frunk” (the trunk that’s in the front of the SUV) provides welcome extra cargo space. However, the Model X’s Falcon Wing doors don’t permit for a roof rack for skis or bikes.

Model X Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The Model X comes standard with navigation with real-time traffic, four USB ports, a 17-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, a nine-speaker sound system, a rearview camera, power and heated side mirrors, automatic keyless entry, and an automatic liftgate.

Available features include a 17-speaker sound system, satellite radio, a high amperage charger, Enhanced Autopilot (a self-driving option that, among other things, will park the car for you), and Total Self-Driving Capability, which turns the Model X into a fully self-driving SUV.

The two thousand seventeen Tesla Model X comes standard with the brand’s signature 17-inch tabletlike touch screen. It is large and effortless to see from virtually every angle, whether you’re in the driver or passenger’s seat. Almost every function in the SUV is managed via this display, which is crisp and clear. The touch screen is responsive, however its menus are elaborate. Navigation can be tricky to set up, and there are no smartphone integration capabilities like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for integrating your phone’s apps into the infotainment system. However, it’s effortless to pair your phone to Bluetooth for streaming music and making phone calls.

Model X Reliability

Is the Tesla Model X Reliable?

There are no reliability ratings for the two thousand seventeen Tesla Model X. The BMW X6 receives a four out of five predicted reliability rating from J.D. Power and Associates, making it one of the most reliable vehicles on the road. The Audi Q7 scores a below-average Two.Five.

Tesla Model X Warranty

Tesla covers the two thousand seventeen Model X with a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty and an eight-year/infinite-mile battery and drive unit warranty. The BMW X6 and Audi Q7 have the same four-year limited warranty terms.

Model X Safety

Model X Crash Test Results

Like many luxury vehicles, the two thousand seventeen Tesla Model X has not undergone crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Highway Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Audi Q7 earns a top score of Good in all crashworthiness categories and a top score of Superior in front crash prevention from the IIHS. It’s also an IIHS Top Safety Pick.

Model X Safety Features

The Model X comes standard with collision avoidance and automatic emergency braking, as well as a rearview camera. Tesla’s Enhanced Autopilot is available. This uses four cameras and twelve sonar sensors to detect fast-approaching vehicles in adjacent lanes. It permits the Model X to maintain its speed relative to traffic, stay within a lane, automatically switch lanes, merge onto highways, and exit highways onto city streets. Enhanced Autopilot also enables the Model X to identify parking catches sight of and park itself. Then, when you’re ready to go out again, you can call for the car using your phone.

Utter Self-Driving Capability is also available. This self-driving option doubles the amount of cameras from four to eight and does most everything a human driver would do. Just get in and sit back as the Model X drives itself to your destination. Be aware, however, that no amount of technology can substitute for a physical driver, so always recall to stay alert.

The two thousand seventeen Model X’s operating system received a handful of enhancements, and Autopilot details are now displayed on the instrument panel, displaying significant information and surrounding vehicles – it’s almost like watching your Model X in a movie game.

Which Tesla Model X Model Is Right for Me?

The two thousand seventeen Tesla Model X comes in four trims: 75D, 90D, 100D, and P100D. All-wheel drive and five seats are standard. Six- and seven-seat configurations are available. All of the models come with almost identical features and differ only in their batteries and driving range. The best choice for you depends on your budget, how long of a range you want, and how quick you want to go. There is a $50,000 difference inbetween the base model and the top-of-the-line model and a driving range difference of fifty one miles. The top P100D trim may be the fastest, but the second-from-the-top 100D model has the longest range and costs $37,000 less. If mileage is what you’re after, go for the 100D trim and spend your savings on the Model X’s cool available add-ons, like its self-driving feature.

Tesla Model X 75D

The base Model X 75D starts at $85,500 and comes with a seventy five kWh battery, which gives you a driving range of two hundred thirty eight miles. Standard features include navigation with real-time traffic, four USB ports, a 17-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, 14-way power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, a nine-speaker sound system, collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, a rearview camera, power and heated side mirrors, a panoramic front windshield, Falcon Wing rear doors, a proximity key, and an automatic liftgate.

Tesla Model X 90D

Model X 90D starts at $95,500. It comes standard with a ninety kWh battery and base trim features. It boasts a driving range of two hundred fifty seven miles.

Tesla Model X 100D

The 100D starts at $98,500. It comes with a one hundred kWh battery and all lower trim features. It has a 295-mile range.

Tesla Model X P100D

Eventually, the top-of-the-line P100D model starts at $135,500. It comes with a one hundred kWh battery, spectacle all-wheel drive, and lower model features. It adds the Ludicrous speed upgrade, crimson brake calipers, and an active spoiler. It has a range of two hundred eighty nine miles.

Tesla Model X Options

Options available in the Model X include Enhanced Autopilot, which provides the SUV with self-driving features. Enhanced Autopilot is available for $Five,000 from the factory or $6,000 after delivery. For an extra $Three,000 from the factory or $Four,000 after delivery, you can get the Utter Self-Driving Capability feature.

There are several packages available ranging from $750 to $Four,500. They add features like heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 17-speaker sound system.

Who Makes the Tesla Model X?

The Tesla Model X is produced by Tesla Inc., formerly known as Tesla Motors. It is produced in Tesla’s manufacturing plant in Fremont, California. Half of the Model X’s parts are sourced from North America.

The Final Call

The two thousand seventeen Tesla Model X blows away its competitors with its shocking acceleration, agile treating, long all-electric driving range, and superior technology – such as a self-driving feature – that many rivals can’t match. However, its price is above the class average and climbs into six figures almost as quick as it drives. Tho’ there are less-expensive SUVs in the class, none will likely impress you as much as the Model X.

Don`t just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • “Tesla’s Model X has much more in common with the company’s iconic Model S sport sedan than with any SUV or crossover we’ve ever seen, but then that’s a big part of its draw. Like the Model S, the all-electric Model X has explosive power, the range of a conventional gasoline-powered SUV, all-wheel drive and a superbly outfitted cabin that can seat up to seven people.” — Edmunds (2016)
  • “Yes, it is now evident that the company can build an astonishing vehicle. The S is mind-blowing and, just as we were all about to recover, the X blew our mind again.” — Autoblog (2016)
  • “Tesla isn’t Elon Musk’s charming little hobby anymore. It’s become a serious car company, and it belongs now to the people who build the cars, buy the cars, or who just love the brand. It turns out that Tesla’s secret super-hero power isn’t electrical power or exotic technology or even the Silicon Valley way of doing things. Instead the secret power is the feeling it gives you that something good will come of all this, and Tesla Model X makes us feel as if this company is well and truly on its way at last.” — Automobile Magazine (2016)
