Malaysia Car of the Year two thousand sixteen Awards
In 2002, a group of motoring journalists established Malaysia’s very first Car of the Year Awards which would be a much-awaited event at the end of each year. This year, the event has been renamed the Malaysia Car of the Year Awards and has the involvement of the Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI).
At a gala dinner hosted by the MAI tonight and attended by the Minister of International Trade and Industry, Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, the winners of the inaugural Malaysia Car of the Year two thousand sixteen Awards were announced with the 10th generation Honda Civic being the overall winner.

The overall Malaysia Car of the Year Award was chosen from the winners of eleven categories of awards by the judging panel which consisted of seven members. Six are full-time motoring journalists while the seventh is a business journalist. Among the motoring journalists was Chips Yap from Motor Trader.
Honda Malaysia’s former CEO & MD, Y. Ueno, was picked as the Automotive Man of the Year for leading his team to take Honda to the overall No. Two position in the market
The winners of each category were chosen after careful deliberation by the panel across the 12-month competition period which ended on October thirty one this year. The objective of categorisation was two-fold: to accurately reflect the proliferation of fresh types of models and choices in the marketplace for the buyer, and to keep the competition keen.
National brands featured strongly in notable categories. The Perodua Bezza 1.Trio Advance received the highest number of votes in an online poll, to win the People’s Choice of two thousand sixteen category. The Proton Saga, Proton Persona and Perodua also received awards in the Special Mention category, in honour of their value for money, fuel efficiency improvement as well as local in-house design capabilities.
