Kalamazoo man, sixty six dead after head-on crash on I-496

UPDATE (Trio:17 p.m. May Four) – Lansing Twp. Police Chief Kay Hoffman says the person who died in Tuesday’s accident on I-496 near Waverly Rd. was a 66-year-old man from Kalamazoo. Police are still attempting to notify family members. Six News expects to learn the man’s name once family members are notified.

UPDATE (Four:37 p.m.) – The westbound lanes of I-496 have reopened.

UPDATE (Three:48 p.m.) – One person is dead after a two-car accident on westbound I-496 just east of Waverly Rd., according to Lansing Twp. Police Chief Kay Hoffman.

The accident happened around 1:11 p.m. Tuesday. Chief Hoffman says a car traveling eastbound crossed the median and hit another vehicle that was traveling westbound head-on. The driver of the eastbound car died on scene.

UPDATE (Trio:Ten p.m.) – The eastbound lanes of I-496 near Waverly in Ingham Co. are back open. The westbound lanes are closed until further notice.

INGHAM CO., Mich 1:55 p.m. (WLNS) – Firefighters, Lansing Police and Lansing Township officers are on the scene of a two car accident on I-496 near the Waverly Road exit.

Both westbound lanes and one eastbound lane are shut down as emergency crews work on the scene.

One vehicle spinned over and left the road. A 2nd car was strongly bruised.

At this time the officers on the scene will confirm that the accident is “serious” but give no more details.
