Looking for something to do on Father’s Day?
Then you might consider taking dad to the Yutan Car Showcase, where he can see a host of vintage vehicles — and where the kids indeed can scream and climb a wall.
The Stardusters Car Club is sponsoring the third annual showcase from nine a.m. to Three:30 p.m. Sunday in downtown Yutan. Admission is free to spectators.
Those wishing to come in a vehicle in one of twenty seven different classes may do so from nine a.m. to noon. Cost is $15 per vehicle which can include antique and classic cars, hot rods, special interest cars, trucks, motorcycles and also tractors (dating back to one thousand nine hundred sixty and earlier).
First- and second-place trophies will be awarded in the twenty seven categories at Trio:30 p.m.; Stardusters cars will not be judged.
The event also will feature loud-pipes and a kids’ scream competitions. Awards will be introduced in both contests.
For the noisy pipes, competitors will rev their vehicle engines to see which one produces the most thunderous sound. Children can put their mouth pipes to the test during the screaming contest. That event includes three classes.
Other prizes — including a cash prize — will be awarded to attendees via the day. A silent auction also is planned with items including golf passes, restaurant meals, oil switches and store bounty certificates.
A portion the event’s proceeds will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides programs and services to severely injured service members during the time inbetween active duty and transition to civilian life.
Stardusters president Bob Hannan hopes area residents will attend the family friendly event.
“It’s Father’s Day and it’s just a good day to bring the kids if they’re interested in cars — and you want them to be interested in cars, to know how cars run,” he said.
Hannan estimates that the demonstrate will include about one hundred vehicles and approximately five hundred attendees.
The Stardusters club traces its beginnings to 1959. Back then, some youthfull guys in Mead, who had been part of a Boy Scouts’ Explorer program, opted to form a group. Hannan’s dad, William, and other dads knew the youthfull fellows were interested in cars and helped them. They found a building on the east side of Mead and began working on cars.
Step by step, the youthful men’s lives took them in different directions and the group disbanded in the early 1960s.
Then a few years ago, original group members including Greg Larson, Bob Hannan, Fred Witte and Jim Ibsen, began reminiscing about old times. Larson suggested that they form a group.
“We began it up and it’s going good guns,” Hannan said. “Most of the guys are retired. It just works because we have the time and effort to put into it.”
