Fresh research by Which? analysed two hundred seventy eight diesel cars from leading global car manufacturers inbetween inbetween two thousand twelve and 2016, testing average NOx emissions alongside official Euro five and more latest Euro six thresholds – which are set at 0.18g/km and 0.08g/km respectively.
These test have been conducted to highlight which manufacturers are the highest polluters and may inform your future purchasing decisions.

The tests found that all of the sixteen diesel Renault cars tested had NOx emissions that were up to four times higher for Euro five and nine times above Euro six boundaries – 0.73g/km and 0.72g/km respectively.

Nissan, a brand that playmates with Renault, were also among the highest polluters with all six cars tested having an average NOx emissions of 0.8g/km.
Jeep were also among the cars producing the highest emissions, with the two Euro five cars tested emitting on average a whopping 1.735g/km of NOX, which is nine and a half times the Euro five limit they met in official tests.
On the other end of the scale the thirty three BMW and BMW-owned Mini cars tested had some of the lowest emissions for diesel cars

BMW cars faired among the best in the test
Averages for BMW were 0.41g/km from Euro five cars and 0.14g/km from Euro six cars.
Despite the high emission rates exceeding EU thresholds, overall diesel cars are cleaner than they have ever been.
However, in Which?`s findings there are certain car makers emitting significantly more than others.

Richard Headland, Which? magazine editor, said: «While our tests showcase that some car manufacturers are making progress on reducing the amount of toxic emissions from their models, many have a long way to go in cleaning up their act.
“We hope that the improved official tests being brought in later this year will more clearly name and shame those manufacturers that are failing to meet their obligation to lower emissions.”
