Fatal accident on 12th street

The Erie County Coroner was live at the scene of a tragic wreck with JET twenty four Activity News Reporter, Jaclyn Seymour.

As of right now the Streets Department is getting ready to clean up what remains after police say a car hit a semi, then another car and claimed the life of three people.

At around two o’clock this afternoon, calls came in for a car accident at the intersection of West 12th and Cherry streets. The Fire Department even said one person stopped by the fire house to report the accident.

Police Chief, Don Dacus, told us it appeared that a dark blue Hyundai was traveling west on 12th Street at a high rate of speed upwards of around one hundred miles per hour when they ran the crimson light at Cherry Street. The car hit a USF semi truck who Dacus says was traveling around ten miles per hour.

Dacus also said in the influence, the top half of the Hyundai was sheared off from the bottom part of the car. After the Hyundai impacted the semi, the bottom half of the car continued to travel down West 12th Street, striking a third car; while the top part of the Hyundai embedded itself into the semi.

Seymour spoke with the driver of the third vehicle off camera, and he said he was fortunate to walk away with no physical injuries. He chose not to show up on camera, telling the accident took him by accomplish surprise; he didn’t see it coming. He said all of the unexpected, he was hit from behind by the bottom of the Hyundai and that spun him out, causing his car to run into a brick wall.

Three dudes were inwards the Hyundai. Fire officials say two of those studs were ejected from the car, the other was partially ejected. All three guys were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi truck, we are told, was uninjured; but is emotional. shaken up. Him and the driver of the third car involved were taken to the hospital for precautionary measures.

Dacus says the traffic investigators will proceed to analyze the scene of the accident. At this point, police and Erie County Coroner, Lyell Cook, are working to ID the victims in the crash.

Dacus says this accident is still under investigation. They obtained surveillance movie from local businesses. They need to also do more calculations.

Traffic is still closed, as of Five:36pm, to bring in street sweepers and clean up what remains. Officials are not exactly sure how long this will remain closed.
